Melcher Named VP, General Counsel for GRU

melcherChris Melcher has been named Vice President and General Counsel for Georgia Regents University.

Melcher, whose previous positions include General Counsel for The Colorado College and City Attorney for Colorado Springs, will serve as Legal Advisor to the GRU President and his top administrators. He will head the Office of Legal Affairs, serving as a campuswide resource regarding legal issues. Melcher will oversee three senior legal advisors, an associate legal advisor, a paralegal, and a legal service coordinator.

“Melcher is a strategic thinker with a strong history of building strong relationships and thriving in a dynamic environment,” said GRU President Ricardo Azziz. “I am confident he will provide invaluable legal expertise as we advance our mission.”

Melcher is a member of three state bars and the U.S. Supreme Court. His experience in higher education includes campus governance, labor and employment, contracts, business and technology transactions, complex litigation, health care, and much more. As City Attorney for Colorado Springs and General Counsel for the Memorial Health System, he managed 25 lawyers and 14 staff with budgets averaging $7 million.

“My success as Chief Legal Officer and Advisor for a higher education system, and as a Chief Legal Office for a municipal government and public health system, have prepared me well to serve the GRU community,” said Melcher. “I look forward to applying my expertise to such a dynamic, forward-thinking institution.”
