GRU student finishes in top place at Half Marathon

Aubrey Armento, a third-year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University, came in on top for the female division in the GRU Augusta Half Marathon with a time of 1:31:42. The marathon, with its more than 1,500 participants, was held on Feb. 23 in downtown Augusta.

“It was very exciting to win!” Armento said about the race. “There were some tough parts of the course, like running up Walton Way, but I really enjoyed the race.”

The 24-year-old Atlanta native said that she changed her regular routine while training for the race.

“I am a regular runner, usually five to six days a week, but I also do other things like weight training and yoga,” she said. “To prepare for this race, I did at least one long run per week, anywhere from 10-15 miles, along with my regular running routine.”

And while she is a longtime runner, she was very excited, as this is her first win.

“I have been running since high school, where I ran cross country and track. I started doing longer distance races in college,” she said. “I’ve run about 10 half marathons and four full marathons, but I have never won a race before.”

And not only did she win, but she won by seven minutes, which is quite a lead.

Overall, U.S. Coast Guard member Matthew Eyler finished first in the race with a time of 1:15:15. Another notable GRU finisher was Susan Norton, Vice President for Human Resources, who came in third in her age division.
